High-Level Meetings — Sanitation and Water for All

April 2017

The World Bank Group, UNICEF and Sustainable Water for All organized high-level meetings in Washington with finance and sector ministers from around 50 countries "to engage in policy debate, exchange lessons learned and hold each other mutually accountable for progress on improving access to sanitation and drinking water for all". The meeting also brought together Jim Kim, president of the World Bank, Antony Lake, executive director of UNICEF, the Honorable Kevin Rudd, chair of Sanitation and Water for All, and Matt Damon, co-founder of Water.org.

The World Bank requested our collaboration to develop and design the presentations of some key speakers. Our role was to refine the key messages, suggest wording, design a suitable visual, and to fit the result in the SWA template. The engagement lasted about three months in total.

Before

Visual improvement

In this example, the content of the slide remained the same, and we improved on the visual.

Before

Clarity

The text and content of certain slides were reduced to focus on what the visual could convey best, leaving much of the content to the speaker.

Before

In some cases, it meant removing all details from the page, to keep the focus of the audience on the speaker rather than providing a complex slide that would compete for their concentration.

BEFORE

Data visualization

In the case of the slide below, the client wanted a stronger visual to show the funding gap. The dollar signs are to scale with the actual numbers, that is 14 in green and 86 in red outline.

AFTER

BEFORE

In this case, the visuals were a distraction that did not convey the widely varying scale of the funding needs and opportunities. In the redesigned version, the two potential sources of funding (concessional and private) are shown by squares to scale, presenting better how suited they are to meet the investment requirements in the center.

AFTER

Animation

The visual and the animation convey that policymakers can choose the proportions in which either of the two financing options are applied, in relationship to one another. The button would move on a click from the presenter.

Client feedback

Here are some quotes from client representatives after the meetings:

The slides were great and thank you for all your hard effort. It clearly paid off. The slides for the interventions and perspectives were also very clear and concise. Lots of lessons learned here but in terms of the presentations, the major lessons was to get you on board early and keep having you review the documents.
Thanks indeed very much for all the efforts – slides (and associated graphics for the papers) were all really useful and we will keep making good use of them in future.

There were also positive reactions on social media on the presentations themselves
